Uganda Premier League champions Vipers SC have moved swiftly to strengthen their backline, securing the services of versatile defender Nicholas Mwere from BUL FC, Footy-Uganda understands.
The highly-rated defender has put pen to paper on a three-year contract with the Venoms after bringing his spell at BUL to an end. Mwere arrives at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende as a free agent following the expiry of his deal with the Jinja-based club.
Widely regarded as one of the league’s most dependable defenders, Mwere has built a reputation for his defensive discipline, tactical awareness and adaptability. Comfortable operating both as a full-back and a central defender, the 24-year-old offers valuable flexibility to a Vipers side preparing for another demanding campaign on multiple fronts.
His move to Kitende follows an impressive stint with BUL, where he established himself as a key figure in the squad. Before his time in Jinja, Mwere also featured for Busoga United, steadily rising through the domestic ranks to become one of the country’s most respected defenders.
Vipers SC end Ivan Minnaert era after title-winning campaign
Beyond club football, Mwere has represented Uganda on several stages. He was part of the Uganda Cranes squad that competed at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and has also earned recognition with the national beach soccer team, the Sand Cranes.
His consistency during the 2023/24 campaign did not go unnoticed, earning him a place in the Uganda Premier League Team of the Season after a string of standout performances.
At Vipers, competition for places is expected to be intense. Mwere will battle for a regular starting berth alongside established defenders Enock Luyima and Derrick Ndahiro, who is expected to extend his stay with the league champions.
The acquisition comes at a time of transition for the Venoms. The club is currently searching for a new head coach following the departure of Belgian tactician Ivan Jacky Minnaert.
With domestic title defence duties and a return to the CAF Champions League on the horizon, Vipers are assembling a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts, and Mwere’s arrival is viewed as another important piece in that puzzle.
