Playmaker Allan Okello is on the brink of writing his name into Ugandan football folklore after drawing level with Yunus Sentamu as the country’s all-time top scorer at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) since its inception in 2009.
The Vipers SC star has netted three goals so far in the ongoing CHAN 2024 tournament, equaling Sentamu’s record set over a decade ago in South Africa. Sentamu’s three strikes in 2014 had stood as Uganda’s benchmark, but Okello has now matched that feat, becoming joint-top scorer for the Cranes in CHAN history.
Even more impressive, both players hold the record for most goals scored by a Ugandan in a single CHAN edition. Okello’s third strike came on Monday night when Uganda played out a thrilling 3-3 draw against South Africa at Mandela National Stadium, a result that secured the Cranes a spot in the quarterfinals. Rogers Torach, the skipper, netted the winner in scintillating fashion.

With knockout football now on the horizon, the 25-year-old star has a golden chance to make even bigger and stand alone as Uganda’s greatest marksman on the CHAN stage.
In the quarterfinals of the tournament slated for Saturday at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, Uganda could take on one of Congo Brazzaville, Senegal or Sudan.
