Uganda’s dream journey at the FIFA U-17 World Cup reached a painful conclusion on Tuesday, as the Cubs bowed out to Burkina Faso in a dramatic Round of 16 clash at Aspire Zone, Pitch 5. After a tense 1-1 draw, the Young Stallions proved more composed in the shootout, converting all five penalties to seal a 5-3 victory.
Riding high from their unforgettable triumph over Senegal in the Round of 32, the Cubs entered the match brimming with belief. Burkina Faso, equally buoyant after knocking out defending champions Germany, set the stage for what promised to be one of the most tightly contested fixtures of the round.
Uganda were forced to navigate the knockout tie without star forward James Bogere, suspended due to accumulated bookings. Burkina Faso also missed key men Ashiraf Loukman Tapsoba and Isma Azelle, adding another layer of unpredictability to the encounter.
Coach Brian Ssenyondo made only one adjustment to the lineup that faced Senegal, bringing in Enock Bagenda to fill Bogere’s void. From the opening whistle, Burkina Faso enjoyed more of the ball, but Uganda crafted the better chances. Isima Magala came closest to breaking the deadlock with a towering header that kissed the base of the upright, while long-range efforts from Abubakali Walusimbi and Richard Okello forced sharp saves from the Burkinabe goalkeeper.
Uganda eventually found their breakthrough after the interval. A clever layoff from Walusimbi set up Arafat Nkoola, who curled a beauty into the net in the 56th minute to ignite wild celebrations from the Cubs’ faithful.
But Burkina Faso clawed back. Substitute Alassana Bagayogo brought them level, chesting down a cross before calmly guiding his finish beyond Edrisah Waibi to restore parity.
With the match still deadlocked at full-time, Ssenyondo made bold final substitutions: goalkeeper Adrian Mukwanga came on for Waibi, and Derrick Ssozi replaced goalscorer Nkoola. The tactical gamble, however, did not yield the intended result. Burkina Faso were ice-cold from 12 yards, converting all their kicks, while Ssozi was the lone Ugandan to falter in the shootout.
The defeat ends a remarkable campaign for the Cubs, who leave Qatar with heads held high after an inspiring run that captured the attention of the continent. Burkina Faso now advance to face Italy, who prevailed 3-2 against Uzbekistan, in the quarterfinals.
