The floodlights had barely dimmed and sweat still clung to his face, yet Denis Onyango’s smile told its own story, a smile of fulfilment, of a man who had just turned back the hands of time.
After four years away from international duty, the veteran goalkeeper marked his much-anticipated return to the Uganda Cranes with a commanding clean sheet in the victory over Botswana. It was a performance that reminded everyone why he remains one of the finest shot-stoppers the country has ever produced.
CAF clarification keeps Uganda’s World Cup dream alive, but the odds are slim
Speaking to the press, Onyango was quick to underline his ongoing significance to the national setup.
“I remain a key figure in the team (Uganda Cranes). I was allowed to come back and help the team regardless of whether I am playing or not,” the custodian said.
The Mamelodi Sundowns legend expressed gratitude for the opportunity to don the national colours again, reflecting on his journey back from retirement.
“I thank the team for allowing me back because after four years of retirement, it feels good for me to return and support my country. I am glad we discussed first because some people think that if one ages, then they are no longer important,” he added. “I am much humbled that the coaches have shown trust in me, given me the opportunity to play and represent my country.”
Even with decades of experience behind him, Onyango is not content to simply bask in nostalgia. His focus, he says, is now on mentoring the next generation and maintaining unity in the squad.
“It’s crucial to keep the boys motivated. This is a collective responsibility, and since we can never predict what lies ahead, we must give everything we have,” he noted.

“As a country, it’s important to keep winning with AFCON just a few months away. We need to win our games and give our best,” he concluded.
