KCCA FC have reclaimed their place at the top of the Uganda Premier League table after grinding out a crucial 2-1 win over Mbarara City in a tense clash played in Kamwenge on Friday.

The visitors burst into the contest with purpose, and their early intent paid off in the 16th minute when Herbert Achayi rose brilliantly to meet Joel Sserunjogi’s curling corner, steering a precise header past the goalkeeper to hand the Kasasiro Boys the lead.

But Mbarara City refused to be swept aside. Ten minutes later, Muhammad Kanyike produced a moment of individual quality, gliding past his marker before guiding home a composed finish to restore parity.

KCCA nearly hit back instantly through Filbert Obenchan, who arrived well to meet another delivery from Achayi, only to watch his attempt skid narrowly wide of the upright.

After the break, the visitors reclaimed control. In the 50th minute, Achayi, who was a menace throughout, delivered another exquisite ball into the box, and Ivan Ahimbisibwe powered home a header to restore KCCA’s advantage.

Mbarara City almost handed their opponents a gift moments later when Wycliff Ahumuza’s miscued back pass nearly left goalkeeper Aaron Icumar stranded, but the hosts survived the scare.

The Ankole Lions pushed hard for a late equaliser, piling bodies forward in the closing minutes, but KCCA held their defensive shape, absorbing the pressure and eventually seeing out the game.

With the hard-earned victory, KCCA rise to 17 points, reclaiming the summit of the league standings, while Mbarara City remain mired in 15th place with only five points from eight matches.
