The long mid-season lull in the Uganda Premier League was meant to offer clarity, freshness and renewed purpose. Instead, the clash between Maroons FC and KCCA FC at Luzira served up a sobering reminder of how inactivity can dull competitive edge, as the two sides laboured to an uninspiring goalless draw.
With league football having largely gone quiet since mid-December, interrupted by the 2025 AFCON, the expectation was that both teams would return re-energised. What unfolded, however, was a flat contest marked by rustiness, broken rhythm and a glaring lack of attacking conviction.

Clear-cut chances were scarce, with neither side asserting sustained control or showing the urgency required to tilt the balance. The stalemate felt inevitable long before the final whistle, such was the absence of invention and penetration in the final third.
Context only deepens the concern. Both Maroons and KCCA had each played just once in the 35 days preceding this fixture, suffering defeats to Buhimba United Saints and Police FC respectively. That lack of competitive sharpness was evident in the sluggish tempo and disjointed play.
Maroons deliberately turned the contest into a physical battle, disrupting KCCA’s preferred possession-based, fluid approach. The tactic proved effective, denying the visitors any meaningful dominance in midfield and forcing them into hurried, low-percentage play.

Recognising the struggle, KCCA head coach Brian Ssenyondo made changes at the interval, withdrawing Ashraf Mugume and Saidi Mayanja in favour of Brian Jjara and Derrick Nsibambi. Yet the adjustment did little to alter the flow of the game.
Instead, Maroons’ compact structure further limited KCCA’s presence in advanced areas.
Even the later introduction of Emmanuel Anyama failed to spark life into the visitors’ attack, as service into the box remained minimal and predictable. Maroons, by contrast, stayed disciplined and organised, defending as a unit to secure a hard-earned point.

The result lifts the hosts to seventh on 16 points, a respectable return given the circumstances. For KCCA FC, however, the draw represents a significant setback in their title ambitions. Although they remain joint-top on 27 points alongside Police FC, who overcame Calvary FC, Vipers SC loom ominously with two games in hand.
