BUL FC’s quest for Uganda Premier League glory has found a fearless guardian in goal, Thomas Ikara. The 27-year-old shot-stopper has become the backbone of the Jinja-based club’s incredible defensive record, helping the Eastern Giants establish one of the tightest backlines in the division.
Ikara’s assured presence between the sticks has seen BUL record four clean-sheets in their opening five league matches, a run that continued with last week’s goalless stalemate against Express FC. In over 450 minutes of football this campaign, BUL have been breached only once, underlining the discipline and structure that now define their game.

Only reigning champions Vipers SC, who have played just a single fixture so far, boast a better defensive record, they edged UPPC 1–0 on their delayed league debut in Entebbe. Ikara, meanwhile, sits atop the clean-sheet standings with four shutouts, one ahead of Buhimba United’s Jamil Kiyimba. URA’s Chrispas Kusiima, KCCA’s Charles Lukwago, Lugazi’s Juma Mutebi, Express’ Ali Mwirusi and Kitara’s Meddie Kibirige each follow with two apiece.
Ikara’s return to BUL from Ethiopian outfit Sidama Buna ahead of the 2025/26 season has clearly been transformative. When he rejoined the club, his words carried the weight of intent, promises that are quickly turning into performances.
“BUL is like a family to me, I feel safe being back home. I’m here to improve the team’s status from where I left it to a higher momentum. I want to keep as many clean-sheets as I can, and maybe that can help the team to win titles. I’m back here to help the team win trophies,” Ikara asserted after signing a two-year contract with BUL.
True to his word, Ikara has injected renewed stability into BUL’s defensive unit, transforming the side into a team that opponents now struggle to break down. Yet, while the backline looks nearly impenetrable, there’s still work to be done at the other end of the pitch.
Despite being unbeaten after five games, BUL have managed only two victories, netting five goals in total. Their wins came against Maroons (1–0) and Buhimba United (3–0) at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru, while stalemates with URA and Express at home, plus a 1–1 draw away to Mbarara City, highlight a need for sharper attacking efficiency.
As the season takes shape, one thing is certain: with Ikara commanding the goal and confidence surging through the backline, BUL already look like genuine contenders, a team whose title ambitions are being built, quite literally, on a wall of steel.
