Uganda’s long-awaited bow on the FIFA U-17 World Cup stage ended in agonizing fashion, as the Cubs succumbed to a late Canadian rally to lose 2-1 in Qatar on Wednesday night.

For over an hour, the East African debutants looked set to script a fairytale opening chapter to their World Cup adventure. Lively forward James Bogere gave Uganda a deserved lead midway through the first half, timing his run to perfection to collect a defense-splitting pass from Brain Jjara before finishing with remarkable composure past the onrushing goalkeeper.

That moment sparked jubilation on the Ugandan bench, and for much of the contest, the youngsters displayed admirable organization and discipline, thwarting Canada’s repeated attempts to find a breakthrough while threatening with swift counterattacks.

But just when a famous win appeared within touching distance, fortune cruelly turned its back on the Cubs. With the clock ticking down, a defensive lapse allowed Elijah Rocho to sneak in and poke home the equalizer, breaking Ugandan hearts.

Barely moments later, disaster struck again. In stoppage time, Canada were awarded a penalty after a tangle inside the area. Substitute Marius Aiyenero stepped up and confidently dispatched his effort from the spot, completing an improbable comeback and condemning Uganda to a gut-wrenching defeat.

Though the scoreline told a tale of heartbreak, the Cubs’ courageous showing earned widespread respect from fans and neutrals alike. Their fearless display underscored both the promise within this young team and the magnitude of their achievement, becoming the first Ugandan side ever to grace a FIFA World Cup tournament.

The loss leaves Uganda level on three points with Canada in Group K, where they share company with Chile and France. A positive response in their next outing will be vital if the Cubs are to keep their knockout stage hopes alive.
