Lugazi Football Club have ushered in a new era on the touchline with the appointment of seasoned tactician Simon Peter Mugerwa as head coach on a one-year contract, following the departure of Francis Mugerwa and Steven Bogere.
The CAF “A” licensed coach returns to active management barely a month after parting ways with Mbarara City Football Club, where his stint ended prematurely. Lugazi have entrusted him with the task of steadying the ship after a sluggish start to the campaign.
Mugerwa will not work alone. He is set to be assisted by experienced football mind Robert Ssekweyama, who joins the technical bench as the immediate assistant coach, adding further depth and leadership to the dugout.

The club confirmed the new appointments on Christmas Day, officially welcoming the duo in a statement released on December 25, 2025.
“We are pleased to announce the appointment of Simon Peter Mugerwa as the head coach of our senior men’s team with immediate effect. Welcome to the LEADERS, Simon Peter Mugerwa, and Robert Ssekweyama,” the statement claims.
Mugerwa arrives with a wealth of experience across Ugandan football, having previously handled a number of top-flight and lower-division sides including Police FC, SC Villa, Soltilo Bright Stars, Proline FC and Fire Masters. His résumé is further bolstered by extensive involvement in the Buganda Masaza Cup, where he has taken charge of several counties such as Buddu, Bulemeezi, Ssingo, Busiro and most recently Kyaggwe.
Beyond club and regional football, Mugerwa’s coaching roots run deep in school competitions. His journey began at grassroots level, where he sharpened his craft with institutions like Real College Busunju, Kakungulu Memorial School, Masaka Secondary School and, in recent times, Buddo Secondary School.

The new coach steps into the role at a critical moment for Lugazi FC. After nine league matches, the side has managed just two victories, alongside three draws and four defeats. That run leaves them 13th on the 16-team league table with nine points, uncomfortably close to the danger zone.
With a fresh technical team now in place, Lugazi will be hoping Mugerwa’s vast experience and steady hand can inspire a turnaround and inject renewed belief into the squad as the season unfolds.
