Kitara FC will look to tighten their grip on the Uganda Premier League title race when they face regional neighbours Buhimba United Saints in a highly anticipated Bunyoro derby on Friday.
The contest carries extra significance as it will officially become the first competitive Uganda Premier League fixture to be staged at the newly built Hoima City Stadium.
Although the stadium is hosting its maiden league match, Kitara are no strangers to the venue. The Royals previously featured there during the facility’s official opening in December last year, when they faced KCCA in a ceremonial fixture.

Heading into the derby, Kitara sit second on the league table with 43 points and remain within striking distance of leaders Vipers. The Royals arrive with momentum after grinding out a narrow 1-0 victory over Mbarara City in their previous outing.
With the title chase intensifying, the Hoima-based side will be eager to collect maximum points and momentarily reduce the gap at the top.
Buhimba United Saints, meanwhile, travel into the derby battling for survival in their debut season in the top tier. The newcomers currently sit 14th on the standings with 15 points, only two points clear of the relegation zone after suffering a 1-0 defeat to BUL in their last match.
Despite their struggles, Buhimba will draw confidence from their first-round meeting with Kitara, where they managed to secure a victory over the Royals.
Friday’s encounter will also see Edson Agondze come up against his immediate former club after making the mid-season switch from Buhimba to Kitara. The forward has since become one of several attacking options available to the hosts as they look to maintain their push near the summit.
The historical Derby day is finally here.
