SC Villa edged past Lugazi with a slim but valuable 1-0 triumph on Wednesday in Najjembe, keeping their championship ambitions firmly alive.

The contest was decided almost instantly, as the visitors struck within the opening minutes through Frank Ssebufu. The forward reacted quickest in a chaotic sequence, lifting the ball delicately over goalkeeper Allan Batali, who had strayed off his line, to register what proved to be the decisive goal.

The move stemmed from a long delivery by Barasa Mangoli that located David Owori near the edge of the penalty area. Owori was brought down by Juma Ssajjabi, but the loose ball broke kindly for Ssebufu, who wasted no time in punishing the defensive lapse with a composed finish.

Villa continued to push for a second goal, with Ssebufu again threatening around the half-hour mark, only to be denied by Batali’s sharp reflexes. Midfielder Aslam Ssebufu also came close to extending the lead but failed to convert from close range.

Despite trailing, Lugazi nearly restored parity just before the interval. However, Villa’s goalkeeper David Lukwago produced a crucial save to preserve the advantage heading into halftime.

The second half saw Villa adopt a more disciplined and compact approach, focusing on protecting their slender lead. Lugazi searched for an equalizer but struggled to break through a resolute defensive setup.

In the end, Villa held firm to claim all three points, a result that lifts them to third place with 48 points and keeps them within touching distance in the title race.

Lugazi, meanwhile, remain in 13th position on 20 points, hovering just five points above the relegation zone.
