Veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango has finally revealed the five greatest players he has shared a dressing room with at Mamelodi Sundowns during his glittering spell at the club.

The legendary shot-stopper, who has spent more than a decade and a half with the Brazilians, has built one of the most decorated careers in Premier Soccer League history. During that period, Onyango has collected nine league crowns, multiple domestic trophies, the CAF Champions League, CAF Super Cup and the African Football League title.

Speaking in a wide-ranging interview with Pitchside, the former Uganda national football team captain reflected on several moments from his career, including his national team journey, retirement reversal and standout teammates at Sundowns.

When asked to select the best five players he has played alongside at the Pretoria giants, Onyango admitted the decision was far from easy because of the quality he has encountered over the years.

However, he eventually settled on a star-studded list featuring Themba Zwane, Hlompho Kekana, Khama Billiat, Teboho Mokoena and Percy Tau.

Onyango reserved special praise for Billiat, highlighting the Zimbabwean’s versatility and attacking brilliance, noting that he could seamlessly operate both out wide and through the middle.

He was equally full of admiration for Percy Tau, describing the forward as fearless and exceptionally gifted.

According to Onyango, Tau’s quality, mentality and lethal left foot made him a nightmare for defenders and explained why the South African star succeeded during his time in England and Belgium.

The Sundowns icon also named celebrated tactician Pitso Mosimane as the finest coach he worked under at the club, while still acknowledging the influence of the many managers who shaped his successful career.
