Ugandan football great and former Uganda Cranes captain Emmanuel Arnold Okwi has officially called time on an illustrious professional career, closing a memorable chapter that stretched across almost two decades and took him from East Africa to Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.

The 33-year-old confirmed his retirement on Tuesday through an emotional statement, bringing the curtain down on a career that established him as one of Uganda’s most accomplished footballers and one of the country’s finest ambassadors on the global stage.

Reflecting on the difficult decision, Okwi admitted stepping away from the game was anything but easy.

“After many unforgettable years on the pitch, the time has come for me to say goodbye to professional football.”

The prolific forward described football as far more than an occupation, crediting the game for giving meaning and direction to his life.

“Football has been more than just a career, it has been my passion, my purpose, and a dream I have been blessed to live every single day.”

While his club career traversed several countries and leagues, Okwi insisted that nothing compared to the honour of representing Uganda, a responsibility he carried with immense pride throughout his international career.

“Representing my country has been the greatest honor of my journey, and wearing the Uganda Cranes jersey will forever hold a special place in my heart.”

He also paid tribute to the privilege of captaining the national team, a role that cemented his status as one of the leaders of Uganda’s modern football generation.

“Being entrusted with the captain’s armband is a privilege I will always cherish.”

Okwi’s farewell message was equally filled with gratitude for the many individuals who shaped his journey, acknowledging every club, coach, teammate and rival who contributed to his growth.

“To every club that gave me an opportunity, every coach who believed in me, every teammate who stood beside me, and every opponent who challenged me to become better, thank you.”

He reserved heartfelt appreciation for the supporters whose unwavering faith accompanied him throughout the highs and lows of his career.

“Thank you for your unconditional love and unwavering support throughout the years… I will never take your support for granted.”

Although his boots have now been hung up, Okwi emphasized that his commitment to football remains as strong as ever.

“While today marks the end of my playing career, it is not the end of my journey in football.”

He revealed that the next phase of his life will be devoted to nurturing young talent and contributing to the continued growth of the sport that defined his life.

Okwi’s remarkable journey began with SC Villa before his talent earned him a move to Tanzanian heavyweights Simba SC. His career would later include spells with Tunisia’s Étoile du Sahel, Young Africans (Yanga SC), a return to SC Villa, another successful stint at Simba SC, Danish outfit SønderjyskE, Egyptian side Al Ittihad Alexandria, Rwanda’s Kiyovu Sports, Iraqi giants Al-Zawra’a, Erbil SC and finally AS Kigali, where he brought his playing days to a close.

Wherever he played, Okwi became renowned for his pace, eye for goal, technical brilliance and ability to deliver in decisive moments, qualities that made him a fan favourite across several leagues.

His greatest legacy, however, was forged in Uganda’s colours. The forward retires as the Uganda Cranes’ all-time leading scorer, having amassed 28 goals in 95 international appearances while captaining the national team during one of its most defining periods.

Okwi ended his farewell message with words that perfectly encapsulate his enduring bond with the sport.

“This is not goodbye to football, it’s the beginning of a new chapter.”

As the final whistle blows on a distinguished playing career, Emmanuel Okwi leaves behind far more than goals and trophies. He departs as a symbol of professionalism, resilience and patriotism, a football icon whose influence will continue to shape Ugandan football long after his playing days have ended.
