The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has rolled out a landmark funding package for the Uganda Premier League (UPL), committing UGX 2.5 billion per season for the next four years under its newly introduced FUFA Competitions Development Programme (FCDP).

The programme, ratified by FUFA’s Executive Committee, seeks to transform the local game by strengthening club structures and steering the topflight league toward financial independence within five years.

Central to the initiative is the creation of a consolidated fund dubbed “FUFA Goal.” This resource pool will bankroll both the UPL and other domestic competitions, ensuring a streamlined and transparent financing system.

FUFA Communications Director Ahmed Hussein revealed that the decision was inspired by resolutions from the July Elective Assembly in Hoima, where delegates pushed for reforms to reinforce the sporting and financial integrity of Ugandan football.

“The idea is to reinstall a format for club football competitions systems that addresses the sporting and economic objectives. All these will enhance the quality of the football leagues,” Hussein explained to the press.

FUFA will engage with the UPL Board and club executives on Tuesday, August 26, to detail how the UGX 2.5 billion will be distributed and monitored under the new framework.

The Competitions Development Programme marks one of FUFA’s boldest reforms in recent years, coming on the back of significant adjustments to the league format for the upcoming season.
