Uganda Cranes winger Rogers Mato has declared his ambition to break into one of Europe’s top five leagues, insisting his current form is only a glimpse of what he can achieve.

The 21-year-old has been in scintillating form for North Macedonian giants FK Vardar, firing six goals in eight appearances this season. On Friday night, he further underlined his credentials with a clinical brace in Uganda’s 4-0 rout of Mozambique in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, a performance that had fans and scouts buzzing alike.

“This season has started really well for me, and I am very happy to help my club and country,” Mato told Footy-Africa. “Every day I push myself harder because I know where I want to be. Playing in one of the top five European leagues has always been my dream, and I believe I am getting closer with every game. Scoring twice for Uganda was special for me because it shows I can deliver at the highest level.”

Having previously featured for Turkish side Sanlıurfaspor, Brera Strumica, and Ugandan giants KCCA FC, Mato has steadily climbed the football ladder, and his current exploits with Vardar are fueling his hunger for more.

“At Vardar, the team has trusted me, and that has given me confidence to express myself on the pitch,” he added. “But I am hungry for more. I watch players in the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1, and I know I have the ability to play at that level. I’m working hard every single day to make it happen.”

With 33 international caps, eight goals, and four assists for Uganda, Mato is quickly becoming one of East Africa’s most exciting prospects, one who has his eyes firmly fixed on football’s grandest stages.
