Construction of the long-anticipated Hoima City Stadium has entered its final stretch, with progress now estimated at 95 percent, according to State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang.

During his most recent inspection, Ogwang revealed that Turkish construction giant SUMMA is on track to hand over the $129 million project by the end of October—well ahead of initial timelines. Despite this milestone, he cautioned that the facility will not immediately open for public use, as the finishing phase will continue through the remainder of the year.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is expected to officially inaugurate the 20,000-capacity arena in December, coinciding with his scheduled campaign tour of Bunyoro on December 10 and 11, ahead of the 2026 General Elections.

The new stadium is a cornerstone of Uganda’s infrastructure plan as the country prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Positioned as a catalyst for development in western Uganda, the multipurpose venue will support not only football but also athletics, rugby, and other sporting and cultural events. Its design also features an indoor arena, training fields, a semi-Olympic swimming pool, and multiple outdoor courts.

“The completion of Hoima Stadium marks a turning point for sports infrastructure in Uganda. It will not only serve as a venue for Afcon 2027, but also help raise the profile of Hoima as a sports and economic centre,” Ogwang emphasized.

The project has been hailed as one of the most significant sports investments in Uganda’s history and is expected to establish Hoima as a regional hub for both competition and commerce.
