SC Villa ground out a narrow but valuable 1-0 win over Calvary FC in their Uganda Premier League clash at FUFA Stadium, Kadiba, on Wednesday, with an early spot kick proving decisive.

The Jogoos wasted no time in asserting themselves, striking inside the opening five minutes. Calvary skipper Stephen Oriokot brought down Najib Yiga inside the box, leaving the referee with little option but to point to the spot. Aslam Ssemakula assumed responsibility and showed admirable composure, rolling the ball home from 12 yards to hand Villa an early advantage.

Buoyed by the breakthrough, SC Villa pushed forward, searching for a second goal. Frank Mulimi delivered an inviting cross from the right, but Frank Ssebuufu agonisingly failed to get a telling touch as Calvary survived another scare.

At the other end, Calvary showed flashes of intent. Andrew Kiwanuka unleashed a fierce effort midway through the first half, forcing SC Villa goalkeeper David Lukwago into action. The shot had venom, but Lukwago reacted sharply to punch the ball clear in the 26th minute.

After the interval, the contest lost much of its earlier tempo. Both sides struggled to impose themselves as play became scrappy and chances dried up. Substitutions were made in an attempt to inject energy, particularly in midfield, but the fresh faces failed to significantly alter the rhythm of the match.

In the end, Ssemakula’s early penalty stood as the difference, securing three points for SC Villa. The result lifts the 16-time champions to third place on the league table with 23 points from 10 matches. For Calvary, the misery continues, as they remain rooted to the bottom of the standings with just three points after 11 outings.
