Express FC’s plans to restore stability and competitiveness ahead of the upcoming Uganda Premier League season are gathering pace, with former midfielder Morley Byekwaso now viewed as the frontrunner for the club’s vacant head coach position.
The expected appointment comes shortly after the Red Eagles brought in Cynthia Becky Kimera as Chief Executive Officer, a move that signals a fresh direction for the historic club as it looks to rebuild its structures and challenge again at the top level of Ugandan football, Footy-Uganda understands.
Byekwaso is being lined up as the successor to Jimmy Kintu, who recently left Express to take over at URA FC. The former Uganda international has been without a coaching role since parting ways with SC Villa at the conclusion of the 2024/25 season.
Although the club explored other experienced options, including Sam Ssimbwa and David Obua, Byekwaso’s familiarity with Express, combined with his playing history and coaching experience, has reportedly placed him ahead of the other candidates.
The changes are not expected to be limited to the technical department. Express are also preparing for a reshuffle in their management structure, with Hajji Adam Golooba Ntale, a well-known football supporter and former Butambala Ssaza team manager, expected to take over as team manager.
Ntale would replace Wilfred Mudanya, who has been serving in an interim capacity since the death of longtime team manager Abdu Kinobe in 2021.
The planned appointments are part of a broader strategy by the Red Eagles to rebuild both their football operations and administrative framework. Former club chairman Godfrey Kirumira is also among the prominent figures reportedly being considered for a return in a supporting role as the club seeks to regain its former stature.
While Express FC are yet to make official announcements, the ongoing moves indicate a deliberate effort to create a stronger foundation ahead of the new season, with key decisions expected to shape the club’s future ambitions.
