The National Council of Sports (NCS) is laying the groundwork for what could become one of Uganda’s most ambitious sporting developments, a fully-fledged National Sports Academy strategically positioned in the Bunyoro region.
In a move aimed at elevating the nation’s training capacity ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the government is in advanced plans to acquire additional land from the Bunyoro Kitara Diocese. This land will complement the rapidly rising Hoima City Stadium and host a state-of-the-art training complex designed to serve both the tournament and long-term national sports development.
Earlier this week, an NCS delegation led by Chairman Ambrose Tashobya toured a sprawling 100-acre tract at Sir Tito Winyi College. The site, located just a short drive from the Hoima-Masindi Highway, has been identified as the nucleus for a modern, multidiscipline sports academy.
Under the current blueprint, the project will feature a dedicated training field linked directly to Hoima City Stadium, a necessity for AFCON 2027, but its ambitions stretch far beyond the upcoming continental showpiece. The academy is expected to house six additional training pitches, outdoor basketball and volleyball courts, a gym, dormitories for budding athletes, a visitors’ hostel, academic classrooms, an administration block, and even a swimming pool.

This compact, but comprehensive ecosystem is designed to nurture Uganda’s next generation of elite talent while offering world-class facilities for national teams and visiting sides.
Hoima City Stadium itself, constructed by the Turkish firm SUMMA, is now nearing completion and is scheduled for official handover to the Ugandan government in December 2025. Once operational, it will anchor a broader sports hub that could redefine the region’s athletic landscape for years to come.
With land acquisition efforts underway and NCS pushing for rapid progress, Bunyoro is poised to become a central pillar in Uganda’s sports future, blending AFCON-driven urgency with long-term national vision.
