Omar Ahmed Mandela’s unchallenged return to the presidency of SC Villa marks more than just continuity, it signals belief, trust, and expectation from a fanbase eager to see their club reclaim its towering status.

Elected unopposed on March 22, Mandela steps back into office with overwhelming backing from the Villa faithful, a testament to the progress made during his initial tenure.

But admiration alone won’t sustain success. The road ahead demands decisive leadership, strategic investment, and structural reform. As Mandela begins this new chapter, several critical priorities stand out, each one pivotal to restoring SC Villa’s dominance both domestically and beyond.

Permanent home: from nomads to stability

For a club of SC Villa’s stature, the absence of a true home remains a glaring anomaly. Over the years, the record champions have drifted from one venue to another; Nakivubo, Namboole, Wankulukuku, Masaka, Mityana, and Bombo, never quite settling.

The loss of Villa Park in Nsambya, once the club’s spiritual base, further deepened this instability following city road developments. However, there is a silver lining.

Compensation funds, now reportedly earning significant interest, present a rare opportunity.

As Chairperson Board of Trustees Gerald Ssendaula says, the funds have grown substantially. The moment has arrived to channel that financial cushion into building a permanent home, a stadium and training facility that embodies Villa’s identity and secures its future.

Backing the vision: strengthening Zeljko Kovacevic’s squad

Ambition without investment rarely yields trophies. Mandela himself has spoken about long-term plans to restore Villa’s supremacy in Uganda and make a mark on the continental stage.

But such aspirations demand a squad capable of competing at the highest level.

Depth, quality, and consistency must define the team moving forward. Retaining key players while recruiting top-tier talent will be essential if the club is to translate vision into silverware. Supporting head coach Zeljko Kovacevic with the right resources could prove decisive in Villa’s pursuit of glory.

Unlocking fan power: modernizing VMT registration

The Villa Members Trust (VMT) was introduced as a revolutionary model, designed to bring fans closer to the club while creating a sustainable financial stream. Yet, its potential remains largely untapped.

During Mandela’s previous term, the initiative lacked urgency and accessibility, relying heavily on physical registration at East High School in Kulambiro. This approach inadvertently excluded thousands of supporters, especially those abroad.

A digital transformation is now non-negotiable. By embracing online registration, SC Villa can tap into its global fanbase. Even a modest target, 10,000 members paying 50,000 UGX each, could generate substantial funds to support operations and reduce reliance on external sponsors.

Fixing the message: communication and media overhaul

Despite its stature, SC Villa’s communication machinery has struggled to keep pace with modern standards. Mixed messaging, particularly during the election period, exposed gaps that cannot persist.

In today’s football ecosystem, clarity and engagement are everything. Fans crave transparency, timely updates, and direct interaction with their club. Strengthening the media department, refining messaging, and elevating social media presence will not only build trust but also reinforce Villa’s brand.

Silence breeds speculation, and for a club of this magnitude, that is a risk Mandela’s administration must eliminate.

Monetizing passion: revamping merchandise strategy

Few clubs in Uganda can rival SC Villa’s fanbase. Yet, the commercial returns from this massive support remain underwhelming, particularly in merchandise sales.

Supporters are eager to wear their colors, but supply and innovation have lagged behind demand. The delayed release of kits and limited availability have cost the club valuable revenue.

A structured merchandise strategy is overdue, featuring timely kit launches, wide distribution of replicas, and consistent engagement with fans. Turning passion into profit is not just smart business; it’s essential for financial sustainability.

Mandate ahead

Mandela’s return is not just a continuation, it is a second chance to solidify a legacy. The expectations are higher, the stakes greater, and the margin for error smaller.

From securing a permanent home to empowering fans, from building a formidable squad to modernizing operations, the blueprint is clear. Execution, however, will define this tenure.
