State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang has urged security agencies to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the killing of SC Villa captain and Uganda Cranes defender David Owori, insisting those behind the brutal attack must be brought to justice.

The minister’s call adds government weight to growing demands for accountability following the death of the 27-year-old footballer, whose passing has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s sporting fraternity.

In a statement posted on X, Ogwang described Owori’s death as a devastating blow to Ugandan football and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family, SC Villa and the wider football community.

“I have learnt of the sudden death of Uganda Cranes and SC Villa team captain and Player Mr. David Owori also known as Colgate in the Uganda football circles,” Ogwang wrote.

According to the minister, information available indicates that Owori was attacked by an unidentified group of assailants shortly after leaving celebrations marking his son’s third birthday on Monday night.

“I am reliably informed that as he headed home after celebrating his son’s birthday, he was attacked at around 8:30 pm by unknown gang of thugs that hit him with a paver,” Ogwang said, adding that the incident happened near Kibuye Primary School along Salaama Road in Makindye Division.

The defender was rushed to Case Hospital in Nakasero, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. Despite efforts by medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries at around midday on Tuesday.

Ogwang also echoed the directive issued in Parliament by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, calling on the Ministry of Internal Affairs and law enforcement agencies to ensure the perpetrators are identified, arrested and prosecuted.

“Like the Rt. Hon. Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has guided today when the matter was raised on the floor of Parliament, that the Minister of Internal Affairs makes sure the relevant authorities make full investigations and the family of the late gets the justice they deserve.”

He concluded by extending heartfelt sympathies to Owori’s loved ones and everyone connected to Ugandan football.

“I send my condolences to the family, friends, the SC Villa fraternity and all football lovers in Uganda. May David’s soul rest in eternal peace.”
