Uganda booked their place at the 2026 FIFA U-17 World Cup in dramatic fashion after defeating Ghana 8-7 on penalties following a pulsating 2-2 draw in their playoff showdown.
The high-stakes contest, which carried the final qualification ticket to Qatar, delivered tension, momentum swings, and heartbreak in equal measure as the Black Starlets fell agonisingly short despite twice holding the advantage.
Ghana exploded into the match with confidence and grabbed an early breakthrough in the ninth minute through the red-hot Eric Gyamfi. The forward ghosted into space at the far post before firing clinically through the legs of Uganda goalkeeper Ashraf Lukyamuzi to hand the West Africans a dream start.

Shaken by the early setback, Uganda reshaped tactically by switching to a three-man defence — a move that gradually wrestled control away from Ghana.
The change immediately sparked life into the East Africans’ attack, with Owen Mukise testing goalkeeper John Annan from a distance with a fierce low strike that required a smart save.
Uganda’s growing pressure eventually yielded results in spectacular style. Captain Mukise curled directly from a corner kick to drag his side level with 12 minutes left before halftime, stunning Ghana and igniting belief among the Ugandans.
Buoyed by the equaliser, Uganda continued to surge forward in search of another goal, though Ghana managed to hold firm before the interval.
The East Africans resumed the second half with even greater intensity and nearly completed the turnaround moments after the restart when midfielder John Owino thundered an effort against the crossbar with Annan beaten.

Yet against the flow of play, Ghana restored their lead through Abdul Latif.
The move originated from Gyamfi once again, whose dangerous cross from the left caused panic inside the area. Clement Agyei cleverly allowed the ball to run across him, creating space for Latif to react quickest and bundle home from close range.
As Ghana edged closer to qualification, the match took another cruel twist late on.
Uganda demanded a penalty after Mukise’s delivery struck the arm of right-back Nicholas Asumang inside the box. After consultations and a review prompted by the Ugandan technical bench, the referee awarded the spot kick.
Ibanda Arafat kept his composure under immense pressure and confidently sent Annan the wrong direction to make it 2-2, silencing Ghana’s celebrations and forcing the contest into a tense finale.

Neither side could produce a winner during the 10 additional minutes, sending the playoff into a nerve-racking penalty shootout.
Ghana coach Prosper Ogum attempted a late tactical gamble before the shootout by introducing goalkeeper Michael Armah in place of Annan while also replacing Asumang with Mark Mensah.
But Uganda held their composure from 12 yards, narrowly prevailing 8-7 to spark jubilant celebrations and confirm their place at the global tournament.

The victory sends Uganda to only their second-ever FIFA U-17 World Cup appearance, building on the historic qualification they achieved last year, while Ghana are left to reflect on a devastating near miss.
