Uganda Cranes head coach Morley Byekwaso has praised his charges for their fighting spirit and resilience despite bowing out of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after a narrow 1-0 quarterfinal defeat to defending champions Senegal at Mandela National Stadium on Saturday.

Uganda’s CHAN dream ends as Senegal strike dagger

The decisive goal came midway through the second half courtesy of Oumar Ba, ending Uganda’s hopes of reaching their first-ever CHAN semifinal.

Speaking to the press after the match, Byekwaso expressed immense pride in the team’s journey.

“I am proud of my players. They gave everything on the pitch and showed true character against a very strong Senegal side,” Byekwaso said. “This tournament has been a learning curve, and the boys have represented Uganda with heart and discipline.”

The Cranes advanced to the last eight after topping Group C with seven points, drawing widespread praise for their organization and intensity. Byekwaso, while disappointed by the result, emphasized the positives.

“Of course, the loss hurts, but I look at the bigger picture. We have grown as a team, and this experience will shape us for the future,” he noted. “The fans should hold their heads high just like the players because we have proven that Ugandan football is moving in the right direction.”

Uganda’s wait for a CHAN semifinal birth continues, but the Cranes’ spirited run under Byekwaso has left many optimistic about what lies ahead.
