Uganda’s football governing body, Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), has taken firm disciplinary action against Lugazi FC striker Alfred Leku, imposing a five-game suspension following his conduct in last weekend’s clash against Kitara FC.
The decision stems from events that unfolded at Najjembe, where emotions boiled over at full-time. Leku was adjudged to have hurled a water bottle that struck match official Lucky Kasalirwe, prompting disciplinary proceedings.
According to FUFA’s ruling, the forward’s actions breached established conduct codes:
“He was charged with improper conduct and misconduct against a match official after striking the referee with a water bottle, contrary to Rule 48(3) of the FUFA Competition Rules and Article 14(3) of the FUFA Ethics and Disciplinary Code. The Panel found Alfred Leku guilty of violent conduct against a match official. He has been suspended for five matches from all FUFA-organised competitions, with the sanction taking immediate effect and to be carried over to the 2026/2027 season if not fully served.”
In addition to the suspension, Leku has been handed a financial penalty, reinforcing FUFA’s zero-tolerance stance on such behavior:
“Leku has also been fined UGX 500,000, payable before the completion of the suspension, and warned over his future conduct.”
Uganda Premier League: Late drama, refereeing fury as Lugazi fall to Kitara
The flashpoint of the controversy traces back to a contentious moment during the match, when Lugazi were denied what appeared to be a clear penalty after Alvin Birungi went down in the box under a challenge from Henry Musisi. The decision fueled frustration among the hosts, escalating tensions on the pitch.
Matters deteriorated further when Lugazi’s Richard Ayiko was dismissed after picking up a second booking. Muhammad Shabana then compounded Lugazi’s misery, netting a late winner to secure all three points for Kitara.
Elsewhere, FUFA has also sanctioned Express FC over a breach of matchday medical requirements during their April 21 fixture against NEC FC. The club was faulted for failing to provide a fully functional ambulance, after the one on-site developed mechanical problems and was unable to transport injured player Richard Basangwa.
As a result, Express FC has been fined UGX 1,000,000 and instructed to comply strictly with medical safety standards going forward.
