Uganda Cranes centre-back Bevis Mugabi finally opened his Carlisle United account as the Cumbrians brushed aside Aldershot Town 2-0 in the Enterprise National League on Saturday.

In front of 7,039 fans at Brunton Park, Carlisle needed just seconds after the restart to take control. Regan Linney, slipped through by Jack Wearne, tucked away the opener in the 46th minute to calm the home nerves.

The decisive moment, however, came midway through the second half. Rising highest from a corner, Mugabi powered home on 69 minutes, sealing both the points and his own piece of history, his first goal in Carlisle colours.

“My first goal for Carlisle, in front of the Brunton Park crowd and my family watching — it means a lot. It shows that I am doing my job. The clean sheet makes it even better,” the defender said afterwards.

His commanding display earned him the Vesta Wealth Player of the Match award as Carlisle celebrated their sixth league win of the campaign. The result leaves them third on 20 points, just one adrift of Rochdale and Forest Green.

Carlisle’s next assignment is a tricky away fixture at Altrincham on September 20 at the J. Davidson Stadium.

Mugabi’s journey to Brunton Park has been a winding one, from youth spells at Fulham and Southampton to senior stops at Yeovil Town, Motherwell in Scotland, and Anorthosis Famagusta in Cyprus. Now in Cumbria, he is quickly becoming a fan favourite.
