Uganda Cranes defender Timothy Awany has embarked on a fresh challenge in European football after sealing a move to Bulgarian First League side Botev Plovdiv.
The experienced centre-back joins the club on a free transfer following the expiration of his spell with Israeli outfit FC Ashdod, bringing an end to a memorable seven-year stay with the club.
Awany leaves Ashdod as one of the club’s most dependable players in recent years, having amassed 190 appearances across all competitions. His consistency and leadership at the back earned him a respected status among supporters and teammates alike before he bid farewell at the conclusion of the 2025/26 campaign.
The 29-year-old now heads to Bulgaria, where he has been handed the number 20 jersey ahead of the upcoming season. He arrives as Botev Plovdiv’s fourth acquisition of the summer transfer window as the club continues to reshape its squad in preparation for the new campaign.
Founded more than a century ago, Botev Plovdiv remains one of Bulgarian football’s most historic institutions. The club boasts an impressive domestic pedigree, having lifted the Bulgarian league title on two occasions, won the Bulgarian Cup four times, and secured one Bulgarian Super Cup crown.
Awany will be tasked with strengthening the club’s defensive unit as they seek to improve on last season’s eighth-place finish. His wealth of experience from both international football with Uganda and his lengthy stint in Israel is expected to provide valuable leadership as Botev aim to climb the standings and challenge for higher honours.
The move marks another significant step in Awany’s career and presents the Ugandan international with an opportunity to make his mark in a new league while continuing to fly the flag for Ugandan football on the European stage.
