Uganda Premier League: Vipers eye routine victory as they visit struggling UPDF

Vipers SC travel to the Military Barracks Grounds in Bombo on Wednesday evening with the clear objective of maintaining their grip on the Uganda Premier League summit when they face UPDF FC.

The reigning champions head into the encounter aware that the title race has tightened slightly. Kitara’s victory over Mbarara City on Tuesday temporarily reduced the gap at the top to just a single point.

However, Vipers, who currently sit on 43 points, have the chance to restore their four-point cushion with a positive result away from home.

Historically, the Venoms have enjoyed a dominant record against the army side. UPDF have failed to defeat Vipers in their last 17 league meetings, a run that includes 14 defeats and three draws, further underlining the visitors’ status as favourites going into Wednesday’s clash.

Vipers will look to their attacking options to deliver the goals, with Karim Watambala, Chukwuma Odili and Usama Arafat expected to play key roles in the final third.

At the other end, the defensive unit led by Hilary Mukundane will aim to maintain the solidity that has helped the team stay at the summit of the standings.

For UPDF, the stakes are equally high but for very different reasons. The Bombo-based side is locked in a battle for survival and currently sits second from bottom on 13 points. Despite their position, they remain within touching distance of safety, trailing the safe zone by just two points.

UPDF will take confidence from their most recent outing, a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Kitara.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, KCCA will renew their rivalry with Express in a highly anticipated clash at Lugogo, while Lugazi welcome URA to Nakivubo Stadium in another league encounter.
