Uganda Premier League strugglers Mbarara City have been plunged into fresh turmoil after confirming the suspension of four senior players following a breakdown in relations between the squad and club management.

In an official communication, the Ankole Lions announced that Kitegenyi Henry, Thembo Ibrahim, Wafula Innocent, and Fahad Emuran have been handed indefinite suspensions for what the club describes as acts of indiscipline.

According to the club, the decision was taken after the playersโ€™ conduct was judged to have fallen short of expected professional standards and damaged the image of the institution:

โ€œThe club management has decided to impose an indefinite suspension on the four players due to behavior that is deemed unprofessional and inconsistent with the values of the club. Their actions have compromised the integrity of the team and brought the clubโ€™s reputation into question, which we take very seriously.

We hold our players to the highest standards of conduct both on and off the field, and this type of behavior does not align with our commitment to professionalism and respect for the footballing community. The club will continue to monitor the situation and work toward resolving this matter. We remain dedicated to upholding the values of discipline, respect, and teamwork, which are fundamental to the success of our club.โ€

However, sources close to the situation reveal a different layer to the standoff. This website has reliably learned that the suspended quartet, alongside several teammates, had informed club officials of their intention not to play until four months of outstanding salary arrears were cleared.

The fallout from the dispute was evident on matchday. Mbarara City were forced to field just eleven available players during their goalless draw with Lugazi FC on Saturday, January 24, at Kamwenge, a clear indication of the strain within the squad.

The suspensions come at a particularly precarious time for the club. Mbarara City currently sit in the bottom three of the Uganda Premier League standings, having amassed just 11 points, and are facing an uphill battle to avoid relegation as the season progresses.
