The Uganda Premier League roars back into action with Matchweek 27 after a short pause for the Uganda Cup semifinals, and the timing couldn’t be more critical.

With just a handful of games left in the campaign, every fixture now carries weight, whether in the title race, the fight for survival, or the battle for individual honors.

Eight matches line up across the weekend, each with the potential to shift momentum in a season that is edging closer to its conclusion. From a looming relegation to defensive records and a still-open golden boot race, here’s what could define the upcoming round.

Calvary staring at early relegation exit

Calvary FC are on the brink of an immediate return to the lower division, with their fate potentially sealed before the weekend is over. Rooted to the bottom of the standings with just 13 points from 26 matches, their survival hopes are hanging by a thread.

A defeat against Police in Midigo, combined with victories for both Mbarara City and UPDF, would mathematically confirm their relegation. In that scenario, even winning all remaining matches would not be enough to lift them out of the drop zone.

Uganda Premier League enters defining weeks as title race tightens

Despite a difficult campaign, Calvary have shown occasional flashes of resilience, registering their only two wins in recent weeks against Buhimba United Saints and KCCA. Still, the odds remain firmly stacked against them.

NEC eye historic defensive streak

NEC FC head into their clash with Kitara FC carrying one of the most impressive defensive runs in the league this season. They have not conceded in nine consecutive matches and are now chasing a landmark 10th straight clean sheet.

Their last goal conceded dates back to February 17 in a 1-1 stalemate against Vipers, where Milton Karisa struck early before Warren Buule salvaged a late equaliser.

Since then, NEC have tightened up significantly, combining discipline and structure to produce seven wins and two draws without conceding. Their defensive tally now stands at 15 clean sheets in 26 matches.

However, Kitara present a formidable challenge. The reverse fixture ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw, and Kitara have been reliable in front of goal at home, failing to score only once all season.

Vipers closing in on another title

At the summit, Vipers are within touching distance of retaining their crown. Sitting on 59 points, they host URA knowing that another win could bring them to the brink of glory.

Should KCCA stumble against Maroons, victory for Vipers would stretch their lead to eight points with just three matches remaining. If Kitara also drop points, the champions-elect would need only two more points from their final fixtures to mathematically secure the title.

Still unbeaten on the pitch this season, Vipers have already demonstrated their superiority over URA with a convincing 3-0 win in the reverse meeting.

Golden boot race remains unpredictable

While the title race may be nearing its conclusion, the contest for top scorer is far from settled. KCCA’s Ivan Ahimbisibwe leads the way with 12 goals, but the chasing pack remains within striking distance.

Ambrose Kigozi trails closely with 11, while Karim Watambala sits on 10. Frank Ssebuufu and Patrick Kaddu are both on nine, with Usama Arafat and Bedia Djuma Ikamba not far behind on eight.

Despite the tight competition, breaking last season’s benchmark of 19 goals set by Allan Okello looks unlikely. Even the 20-goal milestone, last achieved by Geoffrey Sserunkuma in the 2016/17 season, appears out of reach given the limited number of games remaining.

Buhimba battling to halt losing streak

Buhimba United Saints return to Royals Park under mounting pressure as they attempt to stop a worrying slide. Nine straight defeats have left the team in freefall, and another loss would push that run into double digits.

Their last point came in unusual fashion, a controversial draw against Police on February 17, where substitute Eric Nyonyintono found a late equaliser after entering the pitch in a different kit.

Since then, results have been grim. Losses have piled up against KCCA, Maroons, BUL, Kitara, Calvary, UPPC, Vipers, SC Villa, and Lugazi, with just one goal scored across that stretch.

Express FC, their next opponents, already have the upper hand after winning the reverse fixture 3-1 at Nakivubo. Buhimba now face a stern test as they try to restore pride and end a spiraling run.

As the league enters its decisive phase, Matchweek 27 promises tension, drama, and potentially season-defining outcomes. Whether at the top, the bottom, or among the league’s sharpshooters, the margins are shrinking, and every moment now counts.
