Uganda’s African Nations Championships (CHAN) team is brimming with belief ahead of their decisive Group C clash with South Africa, with midfielder Karim Watambala insisting the side has grown stronger from early setbacks and is ready to make history.

The current crop of the Ugandan CHAN team has the chance to become the first in history to get past the competition’s group stages.

“The boys are in good shape and aren’t willing to disappoint the fans. We’re all prepared and just waiting for the final day,” Watambala said, as quoted by the FUFA website.

“We know where we’ve come from, and we know what it means. We had a setback in our first game, but we learned from our mistakes. We don’t want to disappoint the coaches and everyone who believes in us. We’ve had good preparations, and we’re good to go.”

The Cranes currently sit top of Group C with six points from three matches, recovering in style after a shaky start. A commanding 3-0 win over Guinea and a solid 2-0 victory against Niger have put them within touching distance of a maiden African Nations Championship (CHAN) quarterfinal appearance.

A draw against South Africa will be enough to guarantee qualification, but a win would see Uganda finish as group leaders, underlining their growing confidence and determination.
