For a player who spent much of his first spell in Scotland waiting for his opportunity, Rogers Mato is now stepping onto one of European football’s bigger stages.
The Uganda Cranes forward played a decisive role as Hearts eliminated Rapid Vienna to secure their place in the UEFA Conference League league phase, producing a performance that underlined just how dramatically his fortunes have changed in recent months.
Hearts prevailed 4-3 on penalties in Vienna on Wednesday night after a pulsating second leg finished 2-2 following extra time. The Scottish outfit had taken a 2-2 draw from the opening leg in Edinburgh, ensuring the tie remained finely poised heading into the return.
The contest took another twist when Hearts were reduced to ten men after Thomas Magnusson’s 76th-minute dismissal. Yet rather than retreat, Hearts found a way to stay alive, with Mato eventually emerging as one of the night’s most influential figures.
Introduced from the bench before extra time, the Ugandan immediately injected energy into the Hearts attack. His contribution soon translated into a goal as Mato whipped a dangerous delivery into the area, with Calvin Miller converting it with a volley to give Hearts a 2-1 advantage.
Rapid refused to surrender, finding a late equaliser to force the tie into a penalty shootout.
Mato was entrusted with one of Hearts’ penalties and showed no hesitation, dispatching his effort as the Scottish side held their nerve to win 4-3 and advance to the Conference League league phase.

From the margins to the match-winner’s role
Mato’s Hearts story began under very different circumstances.
The forward arrived in Scotland on loan from Vardar during the January 2026 transfer window, but his introduction to Scottish football was anything but smooth. Opportunities were scarce, minutes were limited and the Ugandan struggled to establish himself in a team chasing the Scottish Premiership title alongside Celtic and Rangers.
It was a difficult setting in which to make an immediate impression.
Hearts had already reached an agreement to sign Mato permanently on a three-year contract beginning in the summer of 2026, when his Vardar contract expired. However, an injury to then-captain Lawrence Shankland prompted the club to accelerate his arrival and bring him in on loan.
Shankland has since departed for Rangers, but Mato’s limited involvement during the loan period inevitably raised questions about whether the permanent transfer would ultimately go ahead.
Those doubts were hardly surprising. For Ugandan players attempting to establish themselves in unfamiliar European leagues, a slow start can quickly become a difficult narrative to escape.

The breakthrough finally arrives
The beginning of Hearts’ preparations for the 2026/27 campaign offered the forward another opportunity to make his case.
Mato travelled with the squad to Spain for their pre-season training camp, providing an early indication that he remained part of the club’s plans. Even then, though, his path to regular football was far from guaranteed.
The new campaign began without much change. He was absent from the squad against Aberdeen and was not included on the bench for either leg of Hearts’ Europa League qualifying tie against Benfica, which ended in a heavy 7-2 aggregate defeat for the Scottish side.
Then came the opening. Mato entered in the 73rd minute against Dundee United for his first league appearance of the campaign. Hearts responded emphatically to their opening-day defeat by Aberdeen, sweeping Dundee United aside 4-0 at Tynecastle.
That appearance was followed by an even more significant breakthrough.
Mato earned his first start and marked it with his first Hearts goal, helping the club to a commanding 6-2 League Cup victory over Inverness. Suddenly, the player who had spent months searching for minutes was beginning to make a case for more responsibility.

Europe provides the biggest platform yet
Hearts’ elimination by Benfica pushed them into the Conference League qualifying rounds, where Rapid Vienna stood between them and a place in the competition’s league phase.
Mato featured from the bench in the first meeting in Edinburgh as Hearts and Rapid played out another 2-2 draw.
The decisive battle awaited in Austria. This time, Mato was not merely a participant. With Hearts facing extra time and playing with ten men, he was introduced before the additional period and quickly made his presence felt. His cross created the opening for Miller’s volley, putting Hearts ahead and giving the visitors renewed belief.
When Rapid equalised to make it 2-2, the tie moved to penalties. Mato once again accepted responsibility. He converted his spot-kick with composure, helping Hearts prevail 4-3 and secure their place among the teams competing in the Conference League league phase.

The transformation is striking. Not long ago, Mato was struggling simply to get onto the pitch. Now, he is contributing assists, scoring goals and converting penalties in high-pressure European football.
There is, of course, plenty more work ahead. One dramatic night in Vienna does not guarantee a permanent place in Hearts’ starting XI, nor does it erase the difficulties of the months that preceded it. But the trajectory has changed. Mato is playing more, appearing increasingly comfortable and, crucially, beginning to influence matches when Hearts need him most.
His journey is a reminder that a slow beginning does not necessarily define what comes next. For Mato, patience has begun to produce opportunity, and opportunity is now being converted into impact.
From the fringes of the Hearts squad to a starring role in a European qualification triumph, the Ugandan’s Scottish adventure is finally beginning to look like the move everyone hoped it could become.
And if Hearts need a player who can carry belief through adversity, Mato has already shown that he belongs on that list.
