Young Ugandan football prodigy Denis Kalanzi is quietly turning his dreams into reality, rising from modest beginnings at a community academy to securing a transformative scholarship at the University of Maryland in the United States.

Born on 12th December 2006, Kalanzi’s journey into football began at Streamline Soccer Academy while he was still a pupil at Bethel Junior School. Under the watchful eye of Coach Robert Tugume, his passion for the game began to take shape.

“I began my football journey at Streamline Soccer Academy with Bethel Junior School under Coach Robert Tugume,” he vividly recounts as he spoke to Kawowo Sports.

Those early days were not glamorous. Like many grassroots setups in Uganda, resources were scarce, and opportunities limited. Yet, the environment built his character as much as his talent.

“We struggled a lot because our coach didn’t have sponsors, yet we were many players. It was difficult, but we kept hoping that one day life would change,” he explains.

Despite the hardships, Kalanzi holds deep appreciation for his mentor’s influence.

“He gave us a very good foundation and raised many players. I pray God rewards him accordingly.” Kalanzi confesses.

Rising through the ranks

Kalanzi’s breakthrough arrived in 2023 when he joined Police Football Club, then competing in the FUFA Big League. What started as a step up quickly turned into a defining chapter of his young career.

“I was MVP as Police got promoted to the Uganda Premier League. I appreciate Coach Simon Peter Mugerwa for trusting me and giving me enough playing time,” he lauds.

Transitioning to top-tier football came with its own pressures. The intensity, speed, and expectations demanded rapid growth, but Kalanzi adapted with time.

“My first season in the top league was tough, but my last season under Coach Matia Lule was exciting. I believe that period helped me secure the scholarship,” he adds.

Beyond football, the club provided a crucial support system during difficult moments.

“They supported me during hard times. The club will always be my family,” he noted.

Door opens abroad

The turning point in Kalanzi’s journey came unexpectedly, a call from a United States-based soccer agent that would alter the course of his future.

“I was so excited. When I learned about the University of Maryland, he (agent) told me about the school, and I was so interested because I saw this as a very big opportunity that would change my life and my family at large.”

That opportunity represents more than just education; it is a gateway to global exposure and elite development.

“Playing in the United States will improve my game and exposure. Here, I have access to better facilities and experienced coaches. The game is more technical, and teams have different approaches. I want to learn and improve.”

Eyes on the future

Kalanzi’s story is one of persistence, patience, and belief. From underfunded training sessions in Kampala to stepping onto American soil with big ambitions, his journey reflects the dreams of many young African footballers.

Now in a new environment filled with opportunity, he carries not only his own aspirations but also the hopes of those who supported him along the way.
