The 2026 Fortebet Real Stars Monthly Awards roared into life with a glittering January ceremony that celebrated the country’s standout sports figures, and in football, the spotlight fell squarely on Vipers SC midfielder Abdul Karim Watambala.

Watambala’s explosive form in the opening month of the year proved impossible to ignore, as he powered the Venoms’ charge at the top of the Uganda Premier League table.

The energetic midfielder found the net five times in January, playing a decisive role in a perfect run of results that tightened Vipers’ grip on first place.

His most eye-catching display came against Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), where he struck twice to sink the tax collectors. He followed that up with vital goals against Mbarara City, Police FC and Buhimba United Saints, each contribution helping Vipers register hard-fought victories and extend their lead at the summit.

The midfielder’s all-action performances edged out stiff competition from Entebbe UPPC’s Ambrose Kigozi and his own Vipers teammate, Arafat Usama, to land the coveted monthly accolade.

“I am glad for this win,” Watambala who beat Entebbe UPPC’s Ambrose Kigozi and teammate Arafat Usama revealed to the press.

“This award is motivational and will push me to work hard as I eye consistency,” he added.

With the season gathering momentum, Watambala’s January heroics have set the tone for what promises to be a thrilling campaign,  and Vipers fans will be hoping their midfield talisman keeps the goals flowing as the title race heats up.
