Uganda U-17 head coach Brian Ssenyondo has expressed confidence in his team’s readiness ahead of their opening game against Canada at the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar on Wednesday.

The young Cranes are making their long-awaited debut on the global stage, and Ssenyondo believes his players have gained enough experience and confidence from their recent preparations to compete strongly. He emphasized that the team’s focus is on executing their game plan and representing Uganda with pride.

In the build-up to the tournament, Uganda played three high-profile international friendlies to fine-tune their tactics and assess their readiness. The youngsters held Venezuela to a 1-1 draw, narrowly lost 3-2 to Panama, and put up a spirited fight in a 2-1 defeat to Paraguay. Despite the mixed results, Ssenyondo highlighted the progress and maturity his side showed, noting that the games provided invaluable exposure against top-quality opposition.

“We’ve learned a lot from the friendlies, especially in terms of game management and handling pressure,” Ssenyondo said to the press. “The boys are motivated, disciplined, and ready to give their all for the country. We respect every opponent, but we are not here just to participate, we are here to compete.”

Uganda will be hoping for a strong start against Canada to boost their chances of progressing from the group stage in what promises to be a historic campaign for the East African nation.
